Unit 3: Purpose Clauses

Greek language purpose clauses signify the sequence in action regarding intermediate state in terms of mood/aspect.

ἵνα, ὅπως, ὡς: in order that, so that.

MAIN VERB/DEPENDENT VERB
MAY in primary sequence: subjunctive.
MIGHT in secondary sequence: optative.

Exercises:

  1. επαιδευε τουσ αδελφουσ οπωσ χρυσον πεμψειασ.
    He was teaching the brothers in order that you may send gold.
  2. επαιδευσε τουσ αδελφουσ οπωσ χρυσον πεμφαισ.
    He taught the brothers in order that you might send gold.
  3. οπωσ χρυσον πεμτησ* παιδευσει τουσ αδελφουσ.
    I will teach the brothers in order that you may send gold.
    *present subjunctive active
  4. ου πεμφομεν χρυσον ινα μη ζῳα πεμφωσιν.
    We are not sending gold in order that they may not send beasts.
  5. ουχ επεμφομεν χρυσον ινα ζῳα μη πεμποιεν.
    We did not send gold in order that we might not send beasts.
